REFUSE & RECYCLING INFORMATION
HOLIDAY PICKUP SCHEDULE – 2012
If your normal collection day falls on the holidays listed below, your REFUSE and RECYCLING will be picked up the following day. All subsequent collection days during a holiday week will be postponed one day. This will require a Saturday collection all holiday weeks.
New Year’s Day January 2 Labor Day September 3

Independence Day July 4 Christmas Day December 25
Please be sure that both your refuse and recycling containers are curbside by 6:00 a.m. Refuse and recycling containers that are put out late will not be picked up.
NOTE: Unless plans for toter service are made with your hauler, all trash pails cannot exceed
50 gallons in size or 50 lbs. in weight. Containers must be covered to prevent rain from filling cans causing excess weight. Overweight containers will be left behind.
RECYCLABLES
SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING NO NEED TO SORT RECYCLABLES
F. E. Crandall picks up recycling in both the Town (TCD) and the City (CCD) districts. Your recycling day is the same as your refuse removal day. Acceptable materials for recycling are as follows:
Bottles and Cans (Please Rinse All Items) Paper Products
Aluminum foil and trays Newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office
Metal cans and lids paper, catalogs, fliers, chipboard, egg boxes,
Glass food containers, all colors and sizes (no broken glass) books, paperbacks, telephone books, cereal
Plastic clear #1 see bar code on bottom (soda, milk & water jugs) boxes (remove plastic inserts). These items
Plastic colored #2 (neck smaller than body) should be put in a brown paper bag or tied
Drink boxes (remove straw and flatten) with string and be placed on the side of
Juice and Milk cartons (flatten) your recycling bins.
Plastics # 1-7
Cardboard
Cardboard must be flattened and placed under your blue recycling bin with a length no greater than 3 feet; must be clean, no food or oil stains. Multiple pieces of cardboard must be tied together. (Cardboard that is soiled, please dispose of in regular trash, i.e. pizza boxes.)
Blue recycling bins can be obtained at the Public Works Department at 50 Clinton Avenue or at the Transfer Station at 73 Rogers Road. Any questions, please call 860 823-3798.
In cases of inclement weather, recycling may need to be canceled or delayed. Please listen to WICH radio station for details or call 860 823-3798 for information.
BATTERY RECYCLING
Cell phones, Nicad, Lithium and Hydride batteries may be dropped off at the Public Works Department,
50 Clinton Avenue, Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
BRUSH AND LEAF PICKUP
The City of Norwich provides a scheduled brush pickup in the spring and fall and a bagged leaf pickup in the fall only. The garbage haulers will not pick up these items. DO NOT MIX GARBAGE WITH LEAVES OR LAWN BEBRIS IN THE SAME BAG, THEY WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. Leaf and brush schedules will be posted in the Norwich Bulletin as well as on the City’s website, www.norwichct.org.
BULKY WASTE
The City provides two (2) bulky waste pickups, per calendar year, to all residents who use normal refuse collection. Please call your refuse hauler at least one week in advance to schedule your bulky waste pickups. Sterling Superior Services, Town (TCD): 860 642-7351, F. E. Crandall Inc., City (CCD): 860 536-8487. Items are to be placed curbside. The following restrictions apply:
NO SHEETROCK, SHINGLES OR CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS
Household furniture (including mattresses) Tires
Maximum of two (2) pieces per pickup. Maximum of four (4) automobile
Wooden items, ie: chairs, bureaus, etc. can exceed and/or small pickup truck tires. the limit of (2) pieces. Carpeting must be folded to a maximum of 4 ft. in length They cannot be on the metal rims. No large truck tires.
White Goods Metal
Two (2) appliances per pickup. Maximum length of eight (8) feet.
Anything with freon, ie: refrigerators Maximum weight of fifty (50) lbs.
freezers, dehumidifiers is subject to a per piece. No propane tanks.
$10.00 environmental charge per item. Scrap Wood
The refuse hauler will take note and you A neat pile not to exceed four (4) feet wide,
will be billed separately. eight (8) feet long and three (3) feet high.
No pressure-treated wood.
Note: The total volume of bulky waste placed out for collection is limited to 6 ft. x 4 ft. x 10 ft.
ROGERS ROAD TRANSFER STATION
The Rogers Road Transfer Station (860 823-3796) is located at 73 Rogers Road, Norwich.
The hours of operation are as follows:
Monday through Friday (Except City Observed Holidays) Saturday
8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
12:00 noon to 2:30 p.m.
Items listed below can be dropped off at no charge at the Rogers Road Transfer Station:
Leaves, Recyclables Car batteries
Brush (max. 4 ft. in length-4 in. diameter) Waste oil, oil filters and antifreeze
Grass clippings Fluorescent light bulbs/tubes & CFL’s
Nicad batteries Scrap metal (freon appliances subject to a $10.00 charge)
Electronic Waste: TV’s, Stereos, Computers
All other material will be subject to a fee of $151.00 ton - residential $173.00 ton – commercial.
